You both need to go to any town clerk's office in Massachusetts and file a license application. You initially have a three day waiting period, before you can get your license. Sundays and holidays are included in the three day period. You will need either your drivers license if you don't have then bring a birth certificate with a form of I.D.
The license is good for 60 days. There is usually a fee for the license, ranging from $15 to $50. You need to give the license to your officiant on or prior to your wedding day in the envelope provided to you from the clerk's office. The officiant will complete the form and return it to the towns clerk office within 10 days.
You must be 18 years of age or older. A birth certificate may be required as proof. If either party is under 18 years of age, a court order from a probate or district court where the minor resides must be obtained before the marriage intentions can be filled.
If you are in a rush to get married and want to obtain a waiver before the three days not only does It become slightly difficult but you must have a good reason. You can obtain a court waiver after filing intentions with a clerk through the probate or district court with the Judge.Only under certain circumstances like death of a party is imminent, or the female is nearing birth, then your license will be issued without delay.
After the ceremony, I take the license with the origional envelope provided by City Hall with me and register the info. into a book and I then mail it to City Hall for them to register the info. into their log books.
After 10 days you can go to the town clerks office and you can obtain a copy of your original certificate for a small fee. (Depending on where you applied anywhere from $5.00- $20.00)
